==============
UPDATED
AUGUST 23, 2021
Finally,
with the 1850 and later census reports, we get all the names, ages, and state
of birth for these folks. Again I am listing by County and proximity to each
other.
MARY W. PUTNAM Guilford, Belknap County
Belknap
was formed out of both Strafford and Merrimack Counties in 1840. She is
Perley's widow, Mary Cole, and her family. They were here in 1830 (Strafford
County at that time) and she was widowed in 1840, and she will be here still in
1860. At this point, Mary is 52 NH, Perley 19 NH, Mary A. 15 NH. They live with
John (42 NH) and Susan (40 NH) Lane.
He is
listed as Nathan, but is actually Asahel Putnam, son of Samuel Putnam and Ruth
Spencer a farmer 34 NH, Cynthia 28 NH, Angeline M. 6 NH, Jennisen a son 5 NH
and Emma E. 2 NH. He was born in Acworth. He was in Charlestown in 1840 and in
Claremont in 1860. He was widowed in 1841, married Valena Cynthia Holmes in
1843 who would be the gal listed as Cynthia. By 1870, he will be on his third
wife Thankful (Davis) Frances.
She is
74 MA and has these folks with her. Elizabeth Gleason 46 NH, Mary Gleason 20
NH, Timothy Gleason 13 NH, Sabrina Herrick 28 NH, and Lucinia Higgins 60 NH.
She is Mary Converse, now the widow of John Putnam (548) who just died here
November 17, 1849. Elizabeth (1374) was married to Dr. Timothy Gleason. I don’t
know who the other two are. At any rate, Mary will die here herself September
14, 1853.
He is a
shoemaker 46 NY, Mrs. J. L. 24 NY (actually she is Phoebe Towne 44 NY), Josiah
22 NY, Edwin 20 NY, Susan 18 NY, Sylvia 13 VT, Keziah 11 VT, Sophia 4 VT and
Lucinda 2 VT. He is John Locke Putnam, a son of Josiah Putnam (1725) and Susan
Willard Dickerman from Brattleboro, VT and then a trip into Oneida County New
York before first returning to Vermont He was born November 25, 1804 and will
die here December 3, 1889. He married Phoebe Towne November 5, 1826 in New
York. They just moved here as they are also listed now in Brattleboro, Windham
County Vermont. They are here in 1860.
He is
23 NH and lives in a large Boarding House. Writing bad. Name looks like Rufus
and There is a guy who he fits. Rufus Putnam was a son of Aaron Kimball Putnam
and Polly Shattuck and he was born in Wilton so this all fits.
JOHN PUTNAM Jaffrey, Cheshire County
He
and his wife Sarah Priest Capron have been here since the 1820s, he longer, and
now both have died. I am not sure who was here in 1850, but in 1860 only John
(Junior) age 27 and his wife Susan Nash and their new family are here. Lorenzo,
now 25, will be in Fitzwilliam.
He runs
a livery stable and is 23 MA, His wife Emeline, listed as Mrs. E. L., is 22 NH.
Also here is his brother Solon Smith Putnam 21 MA. Edwin is number 2808, a son
of Peter Putnam (1247) and his second wife Ruth E. Watson of Sutton,
Massachusetts. He was born there November 26, 1826. Solon is number 2809. Edwin
will be operating a Hotel in Hinsdale by 1860.
She is

now listing himself as being 70 MA, but is really only 68 now. His wife, Susan
Rebecca Wheeler is 66 MA. They have been here since right after 1800 when they
were in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. This will be their last appearance though.

He is
actually Amos 3rd, his dad, above, was the second Amos in a row. This Amos was
born here in Winchester April 11, 1824. He married Nancy Robbins here on
February 14, 1845. Nice Valentine Day present for both of them. Amos is 26 NH,

ERI PUTNAM Winchester, Cheshire County
He is
a son of Amos also. He was born in Fitchburg, Mass May 27, 1816 according to a

lists himself as 38 MA, Lucy Houlton 32 NH, James (James Henry who will die in
1857) 2 NH and Ressie R. (Persis Rebecca) 4/12 NH. The Fitchburg birthplace is
correct. Amos (the original one) was in Hopkinton, Hillsborough County through
1800 and here in Winchester from 1820 on. He went back to Massachusetts around
1808 and was there a few years before returning to New Hampshire. Eri married
Lucy Parker Holton November 25, 1846.
He is a

over in the eastern middle part of the state, near North Conway, closer to
Grafton County than other parts of Coos. John Adams (Jr.) of Enfield in Grafton
County had a son Albert born in 1840. Might be him.
She is
15 NH, and lives with David (63 NH) and Mary H. (63NH) Perkins. She would be a

dad died in 1845 and his mom has remarried to Joseph Beckwith. They are next
door in Bennington and his siblings are there too. Warren was born October 6,
1935 and will die here September 4, 1855.
FRANCES & GEORGE PUTNAM Bennington, Hillsborough County
She
is 16 NH, George A. 4 NH. They live with their mother Belinda 41 NH and their
new stepfather Joseph Beckwith. There are also a couple of younger Beckwith
kids from this new marriage. Belinda Brown was married to David Johnson Putnam,
son of Daniel Putnam (1930) and Hannah Johnson from Lyndeborough, who has died

from Fishersfield. He will be with his folks in Dunbarton, NH in 1860, and will

He is
listed as 86 RI and a pauper living in a County alms house. No ideas at all.
She
is 12 NH, and living with William and Harriet Dewers or something like that.
The adults are from VT and CT and there is a kid there from Canada. Might be
some sort of orphanage thing.

Lyndeborough June 19, 1790. He is listed 60 NH, Abigail Foster, his third wife,

Andover, Massachusetts August 1, 1838. These two, and some others back in
Massachusetts are orphans, and have been taken in by relatives (Israel's second
wife, these kids stepmother, was Abigail Hildreth). They were orphaned October
23, 1847. After running away from this home in the 1850s, George went to
Colorado, fought in the Civil War and then will return here, and head to Maine
in the early 1870s. He will then be back in Andover, Massachusetts in the late
1880s.
HANNAH PUTNAM Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County
She
is Hannah Johnson, widow of Daniel Putnam (1930) who died here in Lyndeborough
in 1841. She is 70 NH and lives with her daughter Betsy P. Gage 50 NH (born
January 24, 1800).
ISRAEL PUTNAM Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County
He is
a son of Daniel Putnam (1930) and Hannah Johnson. Israel was born here October
30, 1794. He married Abigail C. Abbott, his current wife, on May 17, 1846. He
had first married Ruth Sargent about 1815, but she must have died in the early
to mid 1840s, as he had a wife in the 1840 census, and now has Abigail. Israel
is 56 NH, Abigail 36 NH, Hannah 19 NH, Sumner S. 16 NH, Abby 2 NH and Ruth
5/12. The last two gals are with Abigail, and they have been named for Izzy's
two wives.
He is
55 NH, and lives by himself. This is the first time he has shown up by himself.
He is a son of Jonathan Putnam 1908 and Mary Hildreth. He was born here in 1804
and has been living with his folks ever since. He never married, and now both
his folks have died since the 1840, and he has simply taken over the old farm
house. I don’t find him again, so I assume he dies here in the next decade.
JOSEPH PUTNAM Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County
He is
a son of Aaron and Phebe, and was born here. He has been here since the 1820
census. He is now 60 NH, Sarah (Shattuck) 60 NH, Willard 20 NH, Ephraim 14 NH,
Henry 14 NH and Levi 1, NH. Levi is a son of Joseph junior and Mary Jamison.
They were married here in 1846 and she died in 1849. Joseph will be in Wabash
County, Indiana in 1860 (Levi will be there then too) and he will have married
the widow of his brother George who is in Indiana right now. Interesting.
WILLARD PUTNAM Lyndeborough, Hillsborough County
He is
20 NH and with John and Emily Stevenson. He is also shown at home with his
folks, Joseph and Sarah Putnam.
AUGUSTA PUTNAM Manchester, Hillsborough County
She
is 16 NH and lives in a boarding house, and works in a cotton mill. She'll be
here doing the same thing in 1860. She is a daughter of John Adams Putnam and

He is
a machinist 27 NH, Lydia J. 21 NH. Also here is Lucy A. Bryant 18 NH. He is
William Henry Putnam. He is part of the 'other' New England family. His folks
were William Putnam and Susan Briggs. He was born in Sharon, Mass. November 5,
1823. I found a record that he married Lydia J. Bryant in Uxbridge,
Massachusetts February 14, 1847. Pretty sure I am right, and in 1860 they will
be in nearby Hookset, New Hampshire. Lucy would be Lydia’s sister.
He is
24 NH, a machinist, Emeline is 28 VT and they have Mary E. 1 VT. They live with
Daniel (30 NH) and Sophia (26 VT) Smith. I would guess Sophia and Emeline are
sisters.
ADELINE PUTNAM Mason, Hillsborough County
She
is 18 NH and boarding with a Chamberlain family. Probably the same family the
next listed Elizabeth will be marrying into. She is a daughter of Cyrus Putnam
and Lucinda Tarble who were here in 1840. Adeline is also listed at home with
her now widowed mother Lucinda here in Mason. Cyrus was a son of Stephen Putnam
and Sarah Burton of Wilton and then Mason, NH.
ELIZABETH PUTNAM Mason, Hillsborough County
She
is 50 NH living with her brothers Albert (21) and Nehemia (48) Hill. She is
Elizabeth Hill, widow of Sylvester Putnam (number 2023). They were married here
May 1, 1842. Sylvester died here July 25, 1846. There were not any children.
Elizabeth will soon marry a Chamberlain guy and live here until she dies in
1888.
EZEKIEL PUTNAM Mason, Hillsborough County
He is
24 NH in manufacturing, Luthina (Lucinia with a lisp?) 23 NH, and Julius or
somesuch name Rolling 2/12 NH. They live with Albert and Lucy Wilson. I would
guess he is one of Cyrus and Lucinda’s kids.
Lucinda
Tarble is the widow of Cyrus Putnam. They were here in 1840. She is 49 NH,
William T. (Tarble) a shoemaker is 21 NH, Martha 20 NH, Adaline 18 NH, Cyrus 16
NH, Nancy L. 14 NH, John F. 11 NH, Abby J. 9 NH and Mary E. 7 NH. There is a
Tarble family a couple of doors away. Rhoda Tarble 83 MA is probably her mom.
Lucinda will be here through the 1870.
AMOS PUTNAM Milford, Hillsborough County
He is
44 NH, Rebecca (Hill) 26 NH, Harriet 7 NH and Emmett (actually Everett) 1 NH.
He is a carpenter. He is a son of Nathan Putnam Jr. (2199) and Lucy Blanchard.
He was born here August 15, 1806. He married Deborah Rebecca Hill on December
15, 1841. She will be here widowed with the kids in 1860. He will die October
23, 1859. He is named for his grandfather on his mother's side, Dr. Amos Putnam

Putnam. He was born here as well and was here in 1840, but in the 1830s went to
Massachusetts, married and had a couple of children.
HERVEY (HARVEY) PUTNAM Milford, Hillsborough County
Another
carpenter. He is listed 29 NH, Lavinia Hall 27 NH, Louisa M. 6 NH and William
K. 4 NH. He is number 2037, another son of Aaron Kimball Putnam. He was born in
Wilton September 21, 1820. He married Lavinia Hall on May 11, 1843 here in
Milford I think, but it might have been back in Wilton.
JANE PUTNAM Milford, Hillsborough County
She
is 34 NH and living with a Herrick family. She might be a daughter of John
Putnam (1884) and Mary Herrick of Wilton. I'd guess the Herricks were kin of
sorts. Rand thinks she could be related to Amos and Rebecca who live down the
street, or he thinks the daughter of Caleb and Jane Longley both of whom are in
Wilton here in Hillsborough County. Then I wonder about really messing up and
wondering if she is Jane Doe or Jane Herrick married to a Putnam fella. Coin
Toss.
LEVI PUTNAM Milford, Hillsborough County
He is
31 NH, a cabinet maker, Harriet E. 27 NH and Eliza E. 3 NH. There are two
boarders as well. He is a son of Aaron K. Putnam and Polly Shattuck. He was
born in Wilton, New Hampshire on December 4, 1818. He moved here with his
brother Hervey or Harvey. He married Harriet E. Stephens on June 5, 1845. They
are both here in 1860. By 1900 he will still be here and with a new wife at
that time.
He is
15 NH a farmer and lives with Percy and Eliza Foster. He looks to be Isaiah
Porter Putnam a son of Thomas Cowdin Putnam and Sarah Colby. He is also listed
at home with them in Nashua, Hillsborough County at the same age of 15 NH.
He is
11 NH. He lives with Anthony and Abigail Raymond and their family. He is Perley
Johnson Putnam, son of David Johnson Putnam and Belinda Brown. His dad died in
1847, and his mother has remarried to Joseph Beckwith and is now in Bennington,
Hillsborough County with his brother and sister. Perley was born July 5, 1838
and will die May 14, 1856.
BARNES B. (BIGELOW) PUTNAM Nashua, Hillsborough County
He is
24 NH (yes, yet another carpenter), Lucy Ann M. 21 NH and James W. 10/12 NH. He
is a son of Gideon Putnam Jr. and Sarah Rice of Nashua. Barnes was born October
1, 1825 in Dunstable or Nottingham, and married Lucy Ann Bills here in Nashua
on May 15, 1849, barely in the nick of time before James was born in August
1849.

Hancock, Hillsborough County on January 20, 1801. He married Sarah Rice in
Hancock on June 9, 1822. They were here in 1840, and in East Sudbury,
Massachusetts in the 1830. They’ll be here till 1854, and then go to Benton
County, Iowa and remain there till they both die in 1878.
He is
now a farmer 79 NH, Sarah Barnes his wife is 69 NH. Also here is Eliza J.
Jewell 19 NH. Eliza Jane is a granddaughter. Her mother Sally was Gideon’s
daughter, she married James M. Jewell. Gideon is number 1877, a son of Joseph
Putnam and Miriam Hamblett of Wilton. He took over the family farm in Society
Land (Bennington) when his folks moved to Vermont. He was born in Temple May
26, 1777, and he married Sarah Barnes in Litchfield, Hillsborough County on

Still not sure who he is. Mary and the son Henry will be here in 1860 without
Sam. Then in 1870 Sam will be here, but no one else will.
CHARLES F. (FRANKLIN) PUTNAM Pelham, Hillsborough County
He is
14 VT and living with a Hodges family. He is likely the son of Franklin Putnam
and Mary Heald Reed from Cavendish, Windsor County, Vermont. His dad died there
in 1840. These are probably kinfolk of sorts. He is also listed now in 1850 at
age 14 VT with Solomon and Eunice Dickinson in Heath, Franklin County
Massachusetts. I don’t find him yet in 1860, but he will marry Isabelle Lacy in
Ponca, Dixon County Nebraska July 4, 1864 and be there till dies June 24, 1924.
I found a descendent stated Charles moved to Massachusetts in 1845 and to
Nebraska in 1854. Perfect. She also remembers the name Ezra popping up which
was his grandfather’s name. Look in the Vermont Section to find out all about
Ezra, and his sons including Franklin. This line goes back Charles >
Franklin > Ezra > Phineas > Stephen > Benjamin > Nathaniel >
John.
CATHERINE PUTNAM Peterborough, Hillsborough County
She
is 70 MA and lives alone. She is number 645, a daughter of Jesse Putnam (240)

He is
39 NH, Lorinda French 39 NH, Mary Jane 16 NH, Emeline 9 NH. Also there is
Charles E. Putnam 33 NH (see next listing). John is a son of Gideon Putnam
(1877) and Sarah Barnes. John was born August 4, 1820. He married Lorinda
French on January 31, 1841. John was in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1850, and
will be in Cheshire County, NH in 1870 with a new wife, Elizabeth Hale, and in
Nashua in 1880 when he has yet another new wife Jane Hicks.
He is
living with the above John, but since they are only cousins, thought I would
give him his own listing. He is listed 33 NH. Charles Edwin Putnam is a son of
John Putnam (1884) and Mary Herrick of Wilton. Charles Edwin was born in Wilton
September 14, 1826.
MARK PUTNAM Nashua, Hillsborough County
He is
41 NH and boarding. He is a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Barnes, and was born
in West Nottingham, Rockingham County December 10, 1818. He also gets another
listing with his family in Mount Vernon, Hillsborough County.
MARY PUTNAM Nashua, Hillsborough County
She
is 54 NY, Sarah 19 NH. Sarah works in a factory. She is Mary Austin Shaw, the
wife of Ephraim Townes Putnam. They were here in 1850. Now only Sarah remains,
Ephraim and at least 6 kids are missing. I wonder if there was possibly a
divorce or something. Just too many missing people here. Also Ephraim won’t die
here until January 16, 1865.
MARY J. PUTNAM Nashua, Hillsborough County
She
is 16 NH, and a servant in the Coburn house. She is also listed with her folks
John and Dorinda Putnam here in Nashua.

Levi Hildreth Putnam 19 NH and staying in a hotel. He is a son of Ephraim
Hildreth Putnam and Susannah Ford. He was born in Lyndeborough November 19,
1841. He was home in 1850.
ELBRIDGE PUTNAM Weare, Hillsborough County
He is
now 49 NH, Hannah Edmunds 46 NH. Also there is his mother Susan Reilly 86 MA.
If you remember back in 1850, she was also there with her husband Philip. They
will be here in 1880, but not Susan.
AARON KIMBALL PUTNAM Wilton, Hillsborough County
He is
now 76 NH, Nancy Wright is 53 MA, their son Rufus is 33 NH. Then there are
Matilda Maynard 35 NH and her son Daniel Maynard 4 NH. Matilda Rockwood Putnam
is their daughter, she was born October 23, 1824. She obviously married a
Maynard fella. Rufus will be marrying Mary Ramsdell in 1861 and be in New

this guy is from Andover, Vermont. He is now 56 VT, Dorcas (also a Putnam) 49
NH, William J. 18 NH, Emma D. 16 NH, George F. 13 NH, and Mary Ann 11 NH. Mary
Ann lost two years in age over the last decade, too bad. The other son, Samuel
Abbott is living here in town and has his own listing.
CALEB PUTNAM Wilton, Hillsborough County
He is
now 81 NH, Sarah his third wife, is 70 NH. He will die here in a couple of
years on September 8, 1862. His second wife, Jane Longley died in 1854. He
married again, I believe to Sarah Shattuck who was the then widow of Jacob
Putnam here in Wilton. Sarah will die here shortly on November 3, 1860. Caleb
will die here September 8, 1862.
ELIJAH PUTNAM Wilton, Hillsborough County
He is
28 NH, a stone cutter, Caroline F. Barnes 24 NH. The IGI lists him as a son of
Joseph Putnam and Sarah Shattuck of Lyndeborough, born July 30, 1832. There are
no other Elijahs with anywhere near the correct age, so I guess the IGI is
correct. I do know he married Caroline Frances Barnes on September 1, 1858
though. He will be here in 1870 with Caroline, and 1880 with a new wife named
Ann, as Caroline died in the 1870s.

his first wife Jenny. He was born in Wilton August 16, 1822. He married Flora
Hortshorn here on December 31, 1850. Now really, there are dozens of marriages
on December 31st , and you know that wasn't when they took place. You just know
they didn't get married on New Year's eve. And, this was well before income
taxes, so you know it wasn't for the year-end marital deduction. It was just
that they didn't get around to recording these things till the end of the
month. There were bureaucratic problems even in those days. But you never, ever
argued with a state that swears by the old 'live free or die' tradition. Even
then, you were just too young to die for the granite state. Anyway, Jacob lives
next door to his folks.
JEROME PUTNAM Wilton, Hillsborough County
He is
25 NH and works on the Hartsham farm. He is a son of Cyrus Putnam and Lucinda
Tarble. He was born April 28, 1834. He was here by himself in 1850 working on

JOHN PUTNAM Wilton, Hillsborough County
He is
52 NH, a day laborer, Abigail (Holt) is 52 NH, Eliza B. 12 NH, Lucius B.

J. in 1850, the age is correct. Anyway, John is a son of John Putnam and Mary
Herrick of Wilton. He was born here June 8, 1807. He married Abigail here in Wilton on
September 12, 1834. In 1850 Abigail was here alone, with 3 kids and listed as a
pauper. I guess John took off on her, but has returned. Doesn't sound like he
has the best job in the world, but Abigail has a roof over her head again. In
1850, John was in Dexter, Penobscot County, Maine. His mother and brother are
in Maine now. Lucius will be in Framingham Mass. in 1870 and married in
Pepperell Mass. married in 1880.
LEVI PUTNAM Wilton, Hillsborough County
He is
40 NH, Harriet E. Stephens, his wife, 37 NH, Lizzie E. 12 NH and George E. 8
NH. He is a brother of the earlier Hervey, and a son of Aaron K. In 1850 both he
and Hervey were in Milford, but Harriet and the kids were somewhere else, or
just not listed.
PHEBE S. PUTNAM Wilton, Hillsborough County

Jones, wife of Samuel Putnam who was a son of Eliphalet Putnam. She will be

He is
now 55 NH, Hannah M. Glidden 47 NH, Ellen 19 NH, Warren 15 NH, and Eliza Jane
12 NH. He had a daughter Emily who would be 17 now. Maybe she married early,
maybe she died. Don't know. He lives next door to Abiel his brother. They are
sons of Eliphalet Putnam Sr. (1843) and Dorcas Abbott. He was born here in
Wilton on August 10, 1803. He married Hannah Glidden here on August 27, 1835.
WILLIAM T. (TARBLE) PUTNAM Concord, Merrimac County

Stephen Putnam Junior (number 1853) and Sarah Elliott. He was born in Rumford,
Oxford County, Maine on February 28, 1798. If you remember back to the 1790
census, you will see that Stephen (jr.) and his folks were here in Temple,
Hillsborough County before heading off to Maine. He married Hannah Whitten.
There are two marriage records. One that they were married December 30, 1826 in
Rumford, and one that they were married here in Concord February 6, 1827.
Hannah will be widowed here with Maria in 1870.
JOHN PUTNAM Dunbarton, Merrimack County
He is
72 NH, looks like Hekrah, turns out as Achsah in 1880, (her name is actually
Achsah Adkins, very hard to decipher) 62 NH, George 22 NH. He is the one who
has been in Fishersfield all these years. He is Andrew's son, look back to the
1820. Mom will be widowed in Goffstown in 1870 with her son George.

The

married Lydia J. Bryant in Uxbridge, Massachusetts February 14, 1847. He and
Lydia were in Manchester in 1850. His dad has just died, and his mother, Susan,
is listed shortly.
CHARLES PUTNAM Hopkinton, Merrimack County
He is
20 NH and a laborer on the farm of Charles Gould. He is probably a son of
Martin Putnam who died here in 1845. For some reason this family wasn't listed

will be here in 1870, and eventually move to Andover, Massachusetts.

He is
now 46 NH and still widowed. Kids are still Mary (Helen in 1850) 17 NH, Joseph

sons, George and William, went to Washington D. C. together in the early 1850s.
